A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Fundus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. fundo: the bottom of anything, such as the bottom of a groove or basin (i.e. a lake or pool); base; = fundamentum,-i (s.n.II); a foundation, basis; (mosses) the base of a peristome tooth, often differentiated in color; see ‘bottom;’

- [fungus] sporulis in corpusculis lenticularibus fundo receptaculi, with the sporules in lenticular bodies at the bottom of the receptacle.

- [Algae; Diatom; Cymbella] ad Càrlsbad, ubi defluit aqua calida ел Hospitals Brunnen, ad fundum (C. Agardh), at Carlsbad, where the warm water flows down from the Hospitals Brunnen, on the bottom.

- [Oscillatoria limosa; algae] habitat in fundo limoso fossarum, lacuum, rivulorumque lente fluentium, demum aquae innatans (Agardh), it grows in the muddy bottom of ditches, lakes and slowly flowing brooks, eventually growing in water.

- [Oscillatoria tenuis; algae] habitat in fundo aquarum quietarum vel lente fluentium non infrequens (Agardh), it grows not infrequently at the bottom of quiet or slowly flowing water.

- habitat in fundo lacuum, it inhabits the bottom of lakes.

- corolla rubra fundo atro (DeCandolle), the corolla red, with a black bottom.

- corollae. parvae albae laciniis denticulatis obovato-oblongis, fundo albo fimbriato (F. Mueller), the corollas small, white with denticulate, obovate-oblong laciniae, at the bottom white, fimbriate.

- lamellae in fundo venoso-conjunctae, lamellae at the base anasomosing (Stearn).

- corolla fundo violaceo excepto lutea, corolla yellow except for the violet base (Stearn).

- petala fundo calycis inserta, petals at bottom of calyx inserted (Stearn 1983).

- corolla constrictione ad fundum 5 mm, with the corolla with a constriction at the base 5 mm.

- pedunculus e fundo nudo ortus, the peduncle arisen from a naked bottom (Steph.), basi paucis paleis armatus, armed at the base with a few paleae.

- discus fundo tubi calycis cylindracei (B&H), disc at the bottom of the tube of the calyx cylindric.

- [Saccogyna] marsupia facie interna cellulis concentricis inducta pistilla in fundo gerentia (Steph.), marsupia on the inner face covered over with concentric cells, bearing pistils [i.e. archegonia] at the bottom.

- [Geocalyx] marsupia cylindrica, facie interna sub ore cellulis clavatis patulis, subclausa. Sporogonium fundo sacculi insertum (Steph.), marsupia cylindric, with the inner face under the mouth with patulous, clavate cells, nearly closed. Sporogonium inserted on the bottom of the saccule.

- germina 7-9 libera in fundo calycis sessilia bigemmulata (F. Mueller), the ovaries 7-9, free, sessile at the bottom of the calyx, with two ovules.

- lamellae in fundo venoso-conjunctae, lamellae at the base anasomosing (Stearn).

- [Asclepias] nectaria quinque, cingentia genitalia, quorum singula oblique extrorsum aurita, e cujus fundo corniculum acutum, versus genitalia inflexum (Linn.), nectaries five, surrounding the genitalia, each one of which on the outside obliquely auriculate, from the base of which an acute corniculum [i.e. with a small horn-like appendage], inflexed toward the genitalia.

NOTE: fundus plantae: “(obs.) the collar or place of junction of root and stem” (Lindley); = collum,-i (s.n.II), q.v.

Pythmen: pythmen,-enis (s.m.III), acc. sg. pythmenem, abl. sg. pythmene, nom. & acc. pl. pythmenes, dat. & abl. pl. pythmenibus: [> Gk. pythmen,-enos (s.m.III), the hollow bottom or stand of a drinking-cup, Lat. fundus: the base or foundation of anything. Also the bottom, root of a tree: generally a root (Liddell & Scott).
