Fissure, crack: fissum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. fisso, ‘a fissure, slit, cleft, split;’ fissura,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. fissure; an opening or crack made by bursting or splitting, a cleft, fissure; the process of cleaving or splitting; rima,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., abl.sg. rima, fissure, crack, cleft, slit; apertura,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., abl. sg. apertura (diatoms), aperture, opening, crack; see crack; see fractura,-ae (s.f.I), a break;

- surculos in fissuram caulis demittens, sending down young shoots in a splitting of the stem.

- in rupium fissuris terra impletis Ohionis, in the fissures of rocks filled with earth of Ohio.

- areolae fissuris profundis separatae, areoles by deep fissures separated.

- fissura ad dimidium longitudinis folii attingens, fissure reaching to half of the length of the leaf.

- antherae obovatae, connectivo apice dilatato, thecis apice distantibus basi contiguis per totam longitutinem rima dehiscentibus, anthers obovate, with the connective broadened at the apex, the thecae separated at the apex touching at the base for the whole length by a fissure dehiscing (Stearn).

- [mosses] perist. dentes lanceolato-subulati trabeculati, inter trabes singulas medias lacuna s. fissura angusta pertusi, (Mueller), the teeth of the peristome [peristomii] lanceolate-subulate, trabeculate [i.e. with projecting cross-bars], between the middle individual cross-bar pierced through with a gap or split.

Terminal fissure (Diatoms): fissura terminalis (adj.B), abl. sg. fissura terminali.
Little fissure, small crack: rimula,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. rimula.
fissure-shaped: rimiformis,-e (adj.B): shaped like a crack or fissure.
