A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
fervens,-entis (part.B): boiling, boiling hot, seething, burning [> L. ferveo (fervere), ferbui and feruo (ferere) ferui: to be intensely hot; (of liquids) to boil, be boiling hot, to seethe, foam; to produce an defect of intense heat, burn; (of emotions, of the passions) to be eager or enthusiastic, impassioned, impetuous; to be roused or fired (with passion, excitement, etc.; to be warm with vital heat etc.; the stars burn, burn with the flower of virtue as though on fire; to come or swarm forth in great numbers; to glow or shine, as of hot metals, aurum fervens, glowing gold; to burn or glow with speed, as of wheels: rotae ferventes, burning wheels; (of sound) hissing; cf. frigescens,-entis (part.B, becoming cold, to be chilled; cf. tepens,-entis (part.B), to be warm; to be moderately warm, lukewarm.

fervent: third-person plural present active indicative, they boil, burn.

NOTE: with only third-person passive forms known in the passive conjugation of ferveo.

- folia incisa in ahenum cortinamve ferventis aquae sed jam ab igne sepositae tepentisque aut melius (ut rei affirmant periti) frigescentis neque ignem expertae conjiciuntur Ray), the lacerated leaves are thrown together into a copper vessel or kettle of boiling hot water, but already having been taken off the fire and of tepid, or better (as the learned affirm this business) chilled water and not having known the fire.
