A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
fere (adv.): approaching, nearly, almost, for the most part, about, virtually; approximately; (but not in the sense of 'usually' or 'mostly', q.v.); paene (adv.) 'nearly, almost;' see almost;

- [Orchis] Genus apud Linnaeum Ophrydeas omnes labello 1-calcarato includit, huic fere sententiae reversi sunt Grenier et Godron (B&H), the genus in the works of Linnaeus includes all the Ophrydeae with a 1-spurred labellum, Grenier and Godron are for the most part contrary to this opinion [i.e. way of thinking].

- capsula clavata fere ad medium solida, capsule club-shaped solid almost to the middle.

- folia obtusata forma fere cordis humani, leaves blunt with the shape almost of the human heart (Stearn).

- lamellae fere liberae, the lamellae almost free.

- marginibus ubique fere valde revolutis, with the margins everywhere for the most part strongly revolute.

- filamenta fere 7 mm supra basin corollae inserta, filaments almost 7 mm above the base of the corolla inserted.

- infima folia omnium fere muscorum aetete squalido terreoque colore induta, the lowermost leave of almost all mosses with age clothed with a squalid and earthen color.

- in planitiebus praesertim paulo salinis fere totius Australia tropicae hactenus exploratae (HaegerSauerb.), in plains especially somewhat saline almost of all of tropical Australia thus far explored.

- nervilli evidentes liberi fere per totam longitudinem sporangiferi, nervilli evident free sporangiferous almost through the whole length.

- a Logania fasiculata R. Br. pr. 456 (L. linifolia Schl. Linnaea xx., 605) recedit glabritie fere perfecta (F. Mueller), it departs from Logania fasciculata by the glabrous state almost complete.

- magnitudo pisi fere vulgaris , aut paullo amplior(S&A), the size of a pea almost commonm or somewhat bigger.

- squamis fere solum in innovationibus obviis (nec persistentibus et marginem frondis longe superantibus), with the scales almost always encountered in the innovations (not persistent and far overtopping the margin of the frond).

- flores foemini formae duplicís, omnes foecundi; ii serierum inferiorum circumscriptione fere figuram cordatam praebentes (F. Mueller), the female flowers of a double shape, all fertile; those of the lower rows displaying in outline slmost a heart-shaped figure.
