exsertus,-a,-um (part.A): exserted, thrust forth, protruding from or extending beyond surrounding organs; hence bare, uncovered; “projecting beyond the orifice of an organ” (Lindley); “protruded beyond, as stamens beyond the tube of the corolla” (Jackson); “projecting beyong an envelope, as stamens from a corolla” (Fernald 1950); (in mosses) with capsules projecting beyond the tips of the perichaetial leaves; (in bryophytes) “projecting and exposed; e.g. capsules or perianths held clear of the tips of perichaetial leaves” (Magill 1990) [> L. exsero (or exero-), exserui, exsertum, 3. to thrust out, put forth, to stretch out, to protrude out]; cf. insertus,-a,-um (part.A), 'affixed to, placed on, originating from;' cf. emergens,-entis (part.B), q.v., partially exposed, half-uncovered, this can also mean ‘partially or slightly exserted;’ opp. inclusus,-a,-um (part.A), included, enclosed, not reaching the surface or extending beyond the surrounding organs; cf. emersus,-a,-um (part.A), partly above and partly below a surrounding organ; cf. immersus,-a,-um (part.A), lying below or embedded within a surrounding organ;

- (moss) theca in pedunculo supra perichaetium exserto at que cygneo reclinata (C. Mueller), the theca bent down on a peduncle [i.e. seta] many times exserted above the perichaetium and also cygneous [i.e. curved suddently downward].

- achaenia elliptica, inclusa vel paulo exserta, achenes elliptic, included or somewhat exserted.

- stamina 4, exserta, ad sinum corollae affixa, stamens 4, exserted, affixed to the sinus of the corolla.

- perianthio ad dimidium longitudinis eius exserto, with the perianth exserted to half of its length.

- ciliis in membrana usque ad 1/4 dentium longitudinis exserta impositis, with cilia situated on a membrane exserted to 1/4 the length of the teeth.

- filamentis in tubum apice 10-fidum elongatum exsertum pilosum arcte cohaerentibus (B&H), with the filaments closely coherent into an elongate exserted pilose tube 10-fid at the apex.

- Antherae in tubo stamineo sessiles v. brevissime stipitatae, inclusae v. exsertae (B&H), the anthers sessile on the stamineal tube or very shortly stalked, included or exserted.

- stylo longe exserto apice barbellato (F. Mueller), with the style long-exserted, shortly bearded at the apex.

- capsulis paene haemisphaericis laevibus triloculatis, valvis vix exsertis velutinis (F. Mueller), with the capsules almost herispheric, smooth, troloculate, with the valves scarcely exserted, velvety.

- theca laevis, ultra folia perichaetialia haud exserta, theca smooth, not exserted beyond the perichaetial leaves.
