A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

eximius,-a,-um (adj.A); compar. eximior,-ius (adj.B); superl. eximissimus,-a,-um (adj.A): “excellent for size, for beauty” (Jackson); excepted, exempt; choice, excellent, outstanding, exceptional; distinguished; extraordinary, uncommon; especially skillful, expert; “out of the ordinary; distinguished” (Stearn 1996) [> L. eximius,-a,-um (adj.A) > eximo, to take ut, take away, remove; ‘taken out from the mass,’ i.e. excepted, exempt; select choice, distinguished, extraordinary, uncommon, excellent” (Lewis & Short)]; cf. illustris,-e (adj.B);

- colore, statura et eximia praesertim duritie haec species a subsequentibus sejunta, by the color, stature and especially its extraordinary hardness this species is separated from the subsequent ones.

- Laserpitium Cyrenaicum, Veteribus, [Theophrasto, Dioscoridi, Plinio, aliis] tantopere celebratum, tam eximii usus in cibo, medicina & jumentorum pecudumque pabulo, quae planta fuerit hodie ignoratur (Ray), Laserpitium Cyrenaicum, so greatly celebrated by the ancients (Theophrastus, Dioscorides, Pliny, others), of such an excellent use in food, medicine and for the fodder of draught animals and [cattle], which plant has been disregarded today.

- Buccaferrea ab Illustrissimo Domino Comite Camillo Antonio Buccaferro Patritio, ac Senatore Bononiensi; omnium bonarum artium cultore, & fautore eximio (Tourn.), [the genus] Buccaferrea from the Most Celebrated Lord Count Camillo Antonio Buccaferro Patritio [Patrician?], and senator of Bologne; supporter and distinguished patron of all the good [i.e. liberal] arts.

NOTE: abbrev. ex. or Ex. = eximius,-a,-um (adj.A), excellent, exceptional; distinguished;

NOTE: the abbreviation –mi (masc. gen.sg.) may represent the superlative of an adjective: -issimus,-a,-um (adj.A): eximissimi, ‘of the most distinguished [man];’

- per manus ill. mi ac ex. mi Aloysii de Vasconcellos & Souza, by the hand of the most illustrious [illustrissimi] and most distinguished [eximissimi] Aloysius de Vasconcelos et Sousa.

Dicentra eximia, ‘choice’ (Fernald 1950); cf. Dicentra spectabilis, the showy Bleedingheart.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
