A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Exemplarium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. exemplario: a copy; a model, pattern, original (Lewis & Short) [ > L. exemplum,-i (s.n.II), q.v.]. Exemplum.-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. exemplo: example, specimen [> L. exemplum,-i (s.n.II) [> eximo; see exemptus, removed, taken away], originally, “what is taken out as a sample; a sample; an equal, a parallel; a sample for imitation, instruction, proof; a pattern, model, original, example, precedent (Lewis & Short). In literature, stories that illustrate a general principle or underscore a moral lesson, a parable]; see specimen; cf. exemplar,-aris (s.n.III); see example; see specimen;

(an example);

- ad exemplum (prepositional phrase), ‘for example.’

- alia nomina asterisco etiam designata, a quibusdam derivantur & ad exemplum *Jacquini, nobis proponuntur (Necker), other names also designated by an asterisc, are derived from certain [ones] and [for example] Jacquini, proposed [published] by us [i.e. me].

- exempli causa or gratia, for instance, for an example; ‘exempli’ = gen.sg., causa and gratia = abl. sg.; see ‘example.’

(botanical) specimen:

- [fungi] stipes in exemplis nostris peridio nudiusculo expallescente multo squamosior (S&A), the stipe in our specimens with an almost naked peridium, becoming very pale, [the stipe] much more scaly.

- exemplum valde imperfectum foliis ademptis a nobis visum (B&H), the specimen seen by us strongly [i.e. very] imperfect, with the leaves taken away [i.e. deprived of leaves].

- exempla juniora pallida, maturescentia dein per fuligineum colorem in nigrum abeunt, younger specimens pale, ripening ones finally through a sooty color passing into black.

- [fungus] semel ad dumeta umbrosa in stercore passerino exempla adolescentia maturaque mixta inventa (S&A), discovered once in shaded [thorn] thickets on sparrow dung, adolescent and mature specimens mixed.

- [fungi] semel gregaria lecta aliquot exempla (variarum aetatum) e stercore vaccino pronata, in via graminosa umbrosa sylvatica (S&A), once some colonial samples collected (of various life stages) prostrate from cow-dung, in a grassy, shaded sylvan path.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
