A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
equinus,-a,-um (adj.A): equine, pertaining to horses [> L. equus,-i (s.m.II), the horse, steed];

- stercus (-oris, s.n.III) equinum, horse manure, horse droppings.

- seta (s.f.I) equina, horse hair.

- Usnea nigra [= Thamnomyces (fungus)], setæ equinæ facie, parum ramosa. The Horse-hair Usnea [Usnea nigra, with the appearance of a horse’s hair, somewhat branched].

- variola equina: horsepox.

- [fungus] Novembri mense, in horto medico insignis Nosocomii Sanctae Мariae Novae Florentiae, super fimi equini tumulos (Mich.), in the November month, in the medicinal [i.e. physic] garden of the sign [i.e. emblem] of the hospital of Sainta Maria Nova of Florence, upon a mound [i.e. pile] of horse manure.

- [fungi] in fimo equino, on horse dung.

- [fungi] praeter stercus vaccinum et equinum, quae vulgaris incolit, aliquoties etiam in succerda, et insignis quidem statura ac luxurie, nobis visus (S&A), besides cow and horse dung, which it inhabits in common, seen at different times by us even on pig excrement, and certainly remarkable in stature and luxuriance.

- Spartium spica et setulis tenuissimis, caudam equinam aemulantibus (Desf.), Spartium [grass] with the spike and setulae very thin, resembling a horse-tail.

- [Hippocrepis; Leguminosae] Legumen plano-compressum v. rarius subteres, saepius arcuatum, margine superiore ad quodque semen profunde excavato, in artículos ferri equini forma secedente (B&H), the legume (pod) flat to compressed or more rarely somewhat cylindric (round), more often arcuate, with the uper margin deeply excavate at each seed, separating at the joints into the form of horse-iron (i.e. a horse-shoe).

- [fungus] ungues praesertim equinos putredine emollitos occupat: inventa tamen in ungula etiam bovina, et tota quidem unicolor alba (S&A), occupying hooves, especially horse, softened with decay: also encountered a cow hoof, and all of them a uniform (dull) white.

- [fungus] vulgaris ubique fungus ad fimum bubulinum, equinum etc.: parcior in graminosis pinguibus (S&A), a fungus common everywhere on gazelle, horse etc. dung: more sparingly in grassy places with fat [i.e. manure].

(fungus) Onygena equina (of old hoofs (of horses) and horns .
