A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
epiphyllus,-a,-um (adj.A): epiphyllous, “inserted upon a leaf” (Lindley); "growing on leaves” (Jackson); growing on leaves or leaf-like organs or, in mycology, on the upper surface of leaves - may be of a plant or other plants; opp. endophyllus,-a,-um (adj.A): endophyllous, growing within the leaf tissue; hypophyllus,-a,-um (adj.A), of fungi, growing on the under surface of the leaf [> Gk. epi, upon + phyllon, leaf]; cf. cauligenus,-a,-um (adj.A);

- in epiphyllo, on the upper leaf-surface.

- [Erineum; fungus] hypo- rare epiphyllum, Erineum [growing] on the under, rarely the upper surface of the leaf.

- mycelium epiphyllum ex hyphis brunneis undulatis septatis 10 um

crassis opposite vel irregulariter ramosis laxe reticulatis compositum, mycelium growing on upper side of leaves from hyphae brown undulate septate 10 um thick opposite or irregularly branched loosely reticulate composed (Stearn).

- legimus speciem pulchram epiphyllam, rarius epixylam, in acervis foliorum variorum exsiccatorum, coelo madente, Junio, Julio, Augusto (S&D), we collected the beautiful species epiphyllous, more rarely epixylous, on heaps of various dessicated leaves in wet weather in June, July, August.

- [fungus] Cauligena epiphyllaque species frequens lecta in Galio sylvatico locis acclivibus umbrosis herbosis (inter Rengersdorf et Cunnersdorf) (S&A), a cauligenous [i.e. growing on stems] and epiphyllous [i.e. growing on (the upper surfaces of leaves] species frequently collected on Galium sylvaticum in shady, grassy upward slopes

NOTE: epiphytic indicates growth on (the surface of) plants.

Epiphyllae: [Plantae epiphyllae] “epiphyllous Algae and Lichens” (Jackson).
