A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
ensiformis,-e (adj.B), ensatus,-a,-um (adj.A): sword-like, ensiform; “quite straight, with the point acute, like the blade of a broad-sword or the leaf of an Iris” (Lindley); 'shaped like a two-edged sword, gradually tapering to the point' (Berkenhout); “quite straight and with a sharp point like a sword or the leaf of an iris” (Stearn 1996) [> L. ensis,-is (s.m.III), a sword]; cf. gladiatus (shaped like a short-sword); see ‘sword-shaped;’

- siliqua sessilis, stylo ensiformi (B&H), silique sessile, with the style sword-shaped.

- siliqua parva, oblique ovoidea, rostro elongato obliquo late ensiformi (B&H), silique small, obliquely ovoid, with a beak elongate, oblique, broadly ensiform.

- CAKILE. Articulus inferior anceps, 1-locularis ; superior ensiformis, 1-spermus (B&H), Cakile.The lower articulation without a head, 1-locular, the upper ensiform, 1-seeded.

- rostro late ensiformi, aspermo;, with the beak broadly ensiform, seedless.

- siliqua parva, oblique ovoidea, rostro elongato obliquo late ensiformi (B&H), silique small, oblique ovoid, with the beak elongate, oblique, broadly sword-shaped.

- siliqua sessilis, stylo ensiformi (B&H), silique sessile, with the style ensiform.

- rostro elongato obliquo late ensiformi (B&H), with the beak elongate oblique, broadly ensirorm.

- stylus incurvus, basi ensiformi-dilatatus, stigmate parvo terminali (B&H), the style incurved, at the base sword-shaped-dilated, with a small terminal stigma.
