A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
eleuther-, eleuthero-; “In Greek compounds = distinct, separate” (Lindley), free, not united [> Gk. eleutheros,-a,-on (adj.) free, (of things) free, open to all]; see ‘free;’ see ‘free-;’ opp. gam-, gamo-, in Gk. comp.. united, with the union of like parts; cf. L.: liber,-era,-erum (adj.A);

- eleutherantherus,-a,-um (adj.A): “(obsol.) having the anthers distinct from each other” (Lindley); “having the anthers distinct, not united” (Jackson).

- eleutherocarpus,-a,-um (adj.A): with free, distinct fruits.

- ELEUTHEROCARPUM, Schlecht. (in Lechl. Pl. Peruv. Exsicc. n. 2060), est Osteomelis species (B&H), Eleutherocarpum is a species of Osteomeles.

- eleutheropetalus,-a,-um (adj.A): eleutheropetalous “polypetalous, having free petals, choripetalous” (Jackson).

- [Adlumia] petala in tubum basi bigibbum apice 4-lobum, corollam eleutheropetalam Dicentrae mentientem, arcte coalita (B&H), petals tightly coalesced into a tube, bigibbous [i.e. with two swellings or enlargements] at the base, 4-lobed at the apex, the corolla with free [i.e. distinct or separated] petals measuring by [i.e. compared to] Dicentra. [note: Dicentra: petala 4, erecto-conniventia, petals four, erect-connivent [i.e. convergent].

- eleutherophyllus,-a,-um (adj.A): eleutherophyllous, with the leaves free, distinct, not united; “separate leaved” (Jackson.

- eleutherosepalus,-a,-um (adj.A): eleutherosepalous, with the sepals free, separate, not united; “with distinct sepals” (Jackson)

- eleutherotepalus,-a,-um (adj.A): eleutherotepalous, with the tepals separate, not united; “having free tepals (Pax)” (Jackson).

ELEUTHERINE. Spatha terminalis v. paucae pedunculatae [sic]. Filamenta libera. Stylus brevissimus, ramis longis subulatis indivisis (B&H), the spathe terminal or short-pedunculate. The filaments free. The style very short, with long, subulate, undivided branches.
