A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
drepan-, drepano-: in Gk. comp., curved like a sickle, sickle- [> Gk. dim. of drepanon (s.n.II), sickle, scythe; a curved sword, scimitar” (Liddell & Scott)]; see falcate; cf. horseshoe-shaped; see sickle-shaped;

- drepanocladus, with sickle-shaped branches; drepanophyllus, with

sickle-shaped leaves; drepanostachyus,-a,-um (adj.A), “with a sickle-shaped, i.e. curved, spicate inflorescence” (Stearn 1996).

- Drepanospermum, Benth. (Cyrtospermum (B&H): semen ab apice loculi pendulum, plano-compressum, loculo hippocrepiformi conforme, (B&H), the seed pendulous from the apex of the locule, flat-compressed, of the same shape with the hippocrepiform [horseshoe-shaped] locule.

Drepanocarpus, Meyer. From drepanon, a sickle, and karpos, a fruit; alluding to the shape of the pods. Fabaceae (Paxton).

(moss) Drepanocladus,-e (s.m.II) “the name refers to curved or sickle-shaped branches (resulting from falcate-secund leaves) (C&A).

Drepanophyllum, Kunth. From drepanon, a sickle, and phyllon, a leaf; alluding to the falcate leaves. Apiaceae. (Paxton);

also (moss) Drepanophyllum,-i (s.n.II), Nomen graecae compositionis a verbis drepanE, ‘falx’ et phyllon (ob folia falciformia) deductum.(C. Muell.), the name composed of a Greek compound from the words drepanE, ‘falx’ (= sickle) and phyllon (due to the falciform [i.e. sickle-shaped leaves].
