A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Domatium,-ii (s.n.II), abl.sg. domatio, nom. & acc. Pl. domatia: “modified [plant] projections for shelter-parasites (Tubeuf)” (Jackson); domatium; “organ of a plant, such as on or the petiole apex, modified to form a chamber or other form of shelter for insects, mites or fungi” (WIII), sometimes called 'shelter-parasites;' (in bryophytes) “modified sheltering projections; e.g. the Nostoc auricles of Blasia” (Magill 1900) [> Gk. domation (s.n.II), little house, bedroom, dim. of doma, house]; cf. acarodomatium,-ii (s.n.II); cf. formicarium,-ii (s.n.II);

- domatium acarinum, abl.sg. domatio acarino: a mite-domatium.

- domatiis ad apicem petioli in foliis ambobus ad quoque nodo, ovoideis vel anguste ovoideis, domatia at the apex of the petiole on both leaves at each node, ovoid or narrowly ovoid.

There is quite a number of Miconia plant species (Melastomataceae) with these mite domatia joining the main veins on the abaxial surface of the leaves.

Formicarium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. formicario, nom. & acc. pl. formicaria: swelling at base of leaf or top of petiole or at node inhabited by ants, as in the genus Tococa of the Melastomataceae; cf. domatium,-ii (s.n.II).

Shelter-parasites: organisms such as insects, mites or fungi that shelter in structural plant modifications.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
