A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
divinus,-a,-um (adj.A):“of or belonging to a deity, divine” (Lewis & Short); of divine origin; divinely inspired, prophetic, godlike, superhuman, excellent “(of a place) sacred to or frequented by gods” (Glare)[> L. divus,-i (s.m.II), a god, a goddess, a deity; cf. divus,-a,-um (adj.A), godlike, divine “an epithet applied to anything deified or of extraordinary excellence or distinction) (Lewis & Short)]; cf. caelestis,-e (adj.B); cf. divus,-a,-um (adj.A), also dius,-a-um (adj.A).

divinissima dona, most divine gifts, i.e., most worthy of a deity;

connected with humanus as a stronger designation for ‘all things, things of every kind,’ etc.

- dedunt se, divina, humanaque omnia, they surrender themselves, all things divine and human.

- in the explanation of ‘philosophia’ by ‘scientia divinarum humanarumque rerum,’ the term ‘divinae res’ denotes ‘nature, physics,’ as distinguished from ‘humanae res,’ i.e. ‘mortals;’

Divinum,-i(s.n.II), abl.sg. divino: the deity = Gk. theon (s.n.II); the divine, that which somes from God; that which is under the sanction of a god;

-in juridicial language, ‘divinae res,’ signifies natural laws, in opp. to ‘humanae res,’ positive laws (Lewis & Short).

Sphagnum divinum; moss: “The specific epithet is derived from the Latin adjective divinus = ”heavenly, blissful, divine” from the protologue.
