A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
diu (adv.): a long time, long (in sense of time), compar. dius (adv.), longer; superl. diutissime (adv.);

- (moss) [Micromitrium] plantae minutissimae in prothallio bysoideo diu persistente sed inconspicuo nidulantes (Austin), plants very tiny, nestling in a long-persisting cottony but inconspicuous prothallium.

- species in utroque orbe inter tropicos diu culta, on both sides of the globe in tropical [regions] long cultivated.

- species distinctissima, affinitate systematica diu dubia, a most distinct species, long doubtful in its systematic relationship.

- carpella ab axi secedentia sed ope nervi liberi a columna centrali diu dependentia (B&H), the carpells, splitting off from the axis but by the use of a free vein hanging for a long time from the central column.

- totus fungus admodum mollis levi etiam digiti pressione valde laesus paene destruitur; ceterum siccus, intactus diu persistens, the whole fungus is quite soft, smooth and with the pressure of a finger strongly damaged, is almost destroyed; otherwise when dry, intact, persisting a long time.

- immo, ni sal marinus eluatur, commode servari nequeunt hæ species, quæ alias aqua dulci maceratæ virorem diutissime servant (Dill.), even more, unless the sea-salt is rinsed out, these species are impossible to preserve properly, while others soaked in fresh water, keep their green color for a very long time.

- [Usnea nigra [= Thamnomyces (fungus)] similem B. sed tenuiorem & parcius divisam, habeo e corbe sàlicina in cella diu reposita enatam (Dill.), the [var. B] is similar but thinner and less divided, [which] I took possession of, sprung up from a willow basket laid away in a cellar for a long time.

- (color) facile eluitur nec diu durat, sufficit tamen pauperoribus pro vestimentis inficiendis (Ray), the color is easily [washed out] nor does it last a long time, yet it is sufficient for poorer people for imparting [a color] to their clothing.

- diu ante dehiscens capsulae durae, capsules hard long before dehiscing.

- diu post anthesin sepala ad receptaculum adhaerentia, for a long time after the period of flowering the sepals adherent to the receptacle.

- numeris specierum descriptis iamdiu 50, with the number of species described for a long time now 50.
