A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Cuspis,-idis (s.f.III), abl.sg. cuspide: a cusp, “a sharp and rigid point” (Jackson);

[> L. cuspis,-idis (s.f.III), “a point, the pointed end of anything; a pointed tube” (Lewis & Short); a sharp point, tip, esp. of a spear; cuspis triplex, a trident, esp. that of Neptune; any rod with a pointed end, stake, wand” (Glare)];

NOTE: apiculus,-i (s.m.II), q.v., “a sharp and short, but not stiff point, in which a leaf may end” (Jackson); mucro,-onis (s.m.(III), q.v., a short, hard, abrupt apical point, shorter than an apiculus; cuspis,-idis (s.f.III), a sharp and rigid point longer and stouter than a mucro; subula,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., slenderly long-acuminate, like an awl or needle, longer than the preceeding ‘points.’

- [Martynia] rudimentum filamenti quinti intra superius par staminum, cuspidis instar breve (Linn.), the vestige of the fifth filament below the upper pair of stamens, short, resembling a cusp.

- [Cucurbita] Stam. margo cingens, in tres cuspides brevissimas desinens (Linn): stamen: the margin surrounding, ending in three very short cusps.

- [Bryum palustris; moss] folia perichaetialia subulata, nervo in cuspidem longam excurrente (C. Muell.), perichaetial leaves subulate, with the nerve [i.e. costa] running out into a long cusp.

Cuspidaria,-ae (s.f.I) DC. (Cruciferae), Tricuspidaria,-ae (s.f.I).
