A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
corvinus,-a,-um (adj.A): of or relating to ravens or crows; raven-black (Jackson)) [> L. corvus,-i (s.m.II), q.v., a raven]; syn. coracinus,-a,-um (adj.A); see black color.

raven (Eng. adj.), q.v., “of the color or glossy sheen of the raven” (WIII).

- caulis crassitie straminis tritici vel pennae corvinae vel gallinaceae, stem with the thickness of straw of wheat or of the feather of a raven or domestic fowl (Stearn).

- [algae] caulis pedalis & ultra, teres, filiformis, pennam corvinam vix crassitie aequans (Agardh), the stem a foot and more, round, thread-like, in thickness scarcely equal to a crow’s feather.

- [algae] caulis pennam corvinam crassitie aequans vel parum superans (Agardh), the stem equalling a crow feather in thickness or somewhat overtopping this.

- (moss) Caulis palmaris ad spithamaeum, pennae corvinae crassitie (Hooker), the stem three inches to seven [or 7.5 inches], with the width of a crow’s feather.

- [algae] frondes basi crassitie pennae corvinae apice abruptius attenuatae (Agardh), the fronds at the base with the thickness of a crow’s feather, at the apex more abruptly narrowed.

- [algae] caulis pennam corvinam crassitie aequans vel parum superans, semiteres vel triqueter, lateribus saepe sulcatis, interdum spinis pusillis & remotis hic illic instructus (Agardh), the stem equalling a crow feather in thickness or somewhat overtopping this, half-terete [i.e. a long narrow body, flat on one side, convex on the other] or three-angled, with the sides often sulcate, sometimes here and there provided with small and remote spines.

- [Onygena corvina;fungus] notabilem fungum in pennis ossiculisque superstitibus cadaveris unici corvini (Corvi Cornicis L.) putredine jamjam conficiendi, loco umbroso jacentis, invenimus (S&A), we came across this remarkable fungus on the feathers and preserved small bones of a solitary crow-carcass (Corvi Cornicis L.), already finishing with putrefaction, fallen in a shady place.
