A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
cornut-, cornuti-; -cornutus,-a,-um (adj.A): in L. comp., horn-, -horned, q.v., with a horn-like appendage; = corni-, q.v.

Gk. = ceras,-atis (s.n.III), abl.sg. cerate; cerat-; cerato-; -ceras,-atis (s.n.III), abl. sg. -cerate; -ceratum,-i (s.n.II); -ceratium,-ii (s.n.II) in Gk. comp.: -horn, -horned, horn-like projection, spur; cf. -ceros,-otis (s.m.III): in Gk. comp.; '-horned.'

NOTE: may be used interchangeably with L. compounds in corni-; -cornis,-e (adj.B), e.g. capricornis and capricornutus.

- cervicornutus,-a,-um (adj.A), with the horns (antlers) of a deer [> L. cervus,-i (s.m.II), q.v., deer].

Utricularia cervicornuta

- quadricornutus, 4-horned; tricornis, tricornutus, three-horned.

- capsula loculicide 5-valvis, apice nuda v. 5-cornuta (B&H), capsule loculicidally [i.e. along the sutures] 5-valved, naked at the apex or with 5 horns [or spurs].

- capsula calycis basi adnata, vertice exserto 2-cornuto (B&H), the capsule adnate to the base of the calyx, with the vertex [i.e. highest point] exserted, 2-horned [i.e. with two horn-like appendages].

Bazzania cornutistipula; Chiloscyphus cornutistipulus, with a horned or spurred stipule.

Globimetula cornutibracteata, with a horned or spurred bract.

Impatiens cornutisepala, with a horned or spurred sepal.

cornutipetala, with a horned or spurred petal.
