Cornix,-icis (s.f.III), abl.sg. cornice: “a crow (or related bird); (noted for its wariness and cunning)” (Glare); [word] kindred with corvus and Gk. korWnE (Lewis & Short); “is renowned as being long lived; its appearance on the left side was considered as a favorable omen; and its cries as a sign of rain; its eyes were used as a charm” (Lewis & Short); see ‘crow;’ see corone (s.f.I), gen.sg. corones, ‘crow.’

The Hooded crow: Corvus cornix L. (1758).

- oculum cornicis, the eye of a crow.

- caulis crassitie straminis tritici vel pennae cornicis, stem with the thickness of straw of wheat or of the feather of a crow.

- Coronopus: the common name (i.e. Deer’s Horn) corrected (by Tournefort): Coronopus dicitur a vocibus Graecis ‘korOnE, ‘Cornix, & pus, ‘pes,’ quasi dicas pedem Cornicis (Tourn.), it is called ‘Coronopus’ from the Greek words ‘korOnE, ‘Cornix’ [= a crow] + pus, ‘pes’ [= a foot] as you might say, the foot of a crow.

Cornicula,-ae (s.f.I): a little crow (Lewis & Short); a crow (Glare) [> dim. L. cornix,-icis (s.f.III) + -ula, dim.].
