Coal; also ‘charcoal, a piece of;’ anthrax,-acis (s.m.III), q.v., abl. sg. anthrace, ‘coal, charcoal;’ carbo,-onis (s.m.III), q.v., abl. sg. carbone, charcoal, coal; see charcoal.

“Bovey coal is probably the bituminized remains of a tree which has been named by Witham Pinites carbonaceus” (Paxton).

anthracinus,-a,-um (adj.A): coal-black; cf. carbonaceus,-a,-um (adj.A).

(Pharm.) Coal-tar: pix carbonis (gen.sg. carbo,-onis (s.m.III) [pix, gen.sg. picis (s.f.III)], abl.sg. pice carbonis.

(Pharm.) coal-tar solution, liquor picis carbonis (Bennitt).
