A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

Circumferentia,-ae (s.f.I): circumference, “1. the line that bounds a circular plane surface or the length of this line equal to [pi] times the diameter: perimeter; periphery, circuit; 2. the surface or outer limits of a sphere or rounded body: the measure of the perimeter of a great circle or sphere; also limits, bounds” (WIII) [> L. circumfero, to bear around = Gk. peri-pherein]; often contrasted with ‘ad centrum,’ at the center, as in Composites, the ray-flowers are circumferential, the tube flowers in the center; see circumference;

- [moss] THECA figuram obverse ovatam, plus vel minus oblongam, habet, circumferentia nimirum cum convexitate operculi spectata (Hedw.), the theca has an obversely ovate shape, more or less oblong, the circumference doubtless observed with the convexity of the operculum.

- [moss] foliis color lete viridis, subtus et ad circumferentiam nonnullis in luteo rutilantem versus, (Hedw.), the color bright green, some below and on the periphery in yellow [color] verging toward reddish-orange.

- Elytriculi ad circumferentiam florum, feminei, 5, singuli plani, 3-lobati ; ad centrum, monoclini, tubulati (Necker), the florets on the circumference of the flowers female, 5, individual ones flat, 3-lobed; at the center monoclinous, tubulate.

- Elytriculi ad circumferentiam florum siti, feminei, plano-lingulati; ad centrum, hermaphroditi, tubulati (Necker), the florets situated on the circumference of the flower, female, flattened-ligulate; at the center, hermaphrodite, tubular.

- Elytriculi circumferentiam florum formantes, neutri, tenuiter tubulati : ore inaequali, majore; ii in centro , monoclini, tubulati: aequali (Necker), the florets forming the circumference of the flower, neuter, thinly tubulate: with the mouth asymmetrical, larger; those in the center monoclinal, tubulate, equal.

- semina, omnia fertilia ; ea in circumferentià fructificationis, apice marginata; in centro, nuda (Necker), the seeds all fertile; those on the circumference of the fructification, bordered at the apex, in the center, naked.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
