certus,-a,-um (adj.A): definite, settled, certain, specified, determined; established, settled; sure, to be depended on, true, reliable; certain, proved, established (beyond doubt); compar. certior,-ius (adj.B); superl. certissimus,-a,-um (adj.A); opp. dubius,-a,-um (adj.A), incertus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v., uncertain, doubtful, ambiguous; opp. incertus,-a,-um (adj.A), indefinite, uncertain;’ see true;

- certum est mihi, ‘it is determined by me,’ it is my decision, resolution, ‘I mean.’

- tamen de vera dlversitate specifica non omnino certi sumus (Agardh), nevertheless, regarding genuine specific differences I am not entirely certain.

- nullum alium synonymon certius mihi videtur (Agardh), no other synonym seems to me to be more certain.

- cellulis matricalibus certo ordine dispositis, with mother cells arranged in a definite order.

- sed deficientibus descriptionibus certi nil determinare possumus, but we are able with deficient descriptions to determine nothing [with certitude].

- Odontocarya, e Brasilia, et Antitaxis, e Malacca, quarum stirpes masculae solae notae sunt, nullo certo charactere ab Euphorbiaceis distinguuntur, nec inflorescentia nec habitu Menispermaceis conveniunt (B&H), Odontocarya, from Brasil, and Antitaxis, from Malacca, the male plants of which only are known, are distinguished by no definite character , neither by the inflorescence nor the habit do they conform to the Menispermaceae.

- planta characteribus levibus et vix certis distincta (DeCandolle), a plant distinct by trivial characters and hardly proven.

- Populares mei certo experimento Cerevisae recentis intempestivam fermentationem inhibent, & a tonitru defendunt collocando in doliis Urticam urentem maximam & frusta Chalybis (Ray), People, from a reliable experiment of mine, inhibit unseasonable fermentation of [young or green] beer, and they protect it from thunder by placing Urtica urens, maxima, and fragments of iron in the barrels.

- Si butyro frigatur herba, & abdomini imponatur, certum est contra tormina remedium. [Cam.] ad quod mulierculae ceu ad sacram anchoram confugiunt (Ray), if the herb may be fried in butter, and applied to the abdomen [i.e. the belly], it is a sure [i.e. reliable] cure against bowel pain [i.e. gripe, i.e. gastric or intestinal pain, colic] to which (common) women resort as if to a ‘sacred trust’ [i.e. ‘sacred anchor,’ i.e. hope].
