A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
centr-, centro-; -centron,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. -centro; -centrum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. centro; -centrus,-a,-um (adj.A): in Gk. comp. ‘-spurred;’ same as ceras,-atis (s.n.III), q.v.

centron: “[> Gk. kentron, a sharp point, a spur, prickle, spike, sting] in compounds = spur” (Jackson); see spur (Eng. noun).

- centranthus, centranthous, with a spurred flower (Stearn).

- dolichocentrus, dolichocentrous; also dolichoceras: long-spurred.

- centrospores: centrosporae,-arum (pl.f.I); plantae centrosporae: “plants having spurred fruits (Clements)” (Jackson).

Corydalis dolichocentra Z.Y.Su & Lidén, sp. nov. "The epithet is based on Greek dolichos (long) and kentron (spur), referring to the long narrow curved spur of this species."

Centradenia,-ae (s.f.I): > from centron, a spur,and aden, a gland, having spur-like glandular appendages to anthers. Melastomaeae (Paxton).

Centranthus,-i (s.m.II): > Gk. c(k)entron, a spur + anthos, a flower; “from the spurred flower. Often incorrectly spelled Kentranthus (Valerianaceae)” (Stearn 1996)

Centropogon,-onis (s.m.III) > Gk. kentron, a spur + pOgOn, a beard; “in allusion to the fringed stigma of these shrubs and sub-shrubs (Campanulaceae)” (Stearn 1996).

Centrosema (DC.) Benth., 'name from the Greek centron, a spur, and sema, a standard, the Butterfly-Pea in the Leguminosae; > Gk. kentron, a spur + sEma, a standard. “The standard has a short spur behind it. Leguminosae” (Stearn 1996).

Dicentra,-ae (s.f.I), a genus whose petals are “slightly cohering into a cordiform or 2-apurred corolla” (Fernald 1950). The name derives from Gk. dis, ‘twice’ + centron, ‘a spur,’ “Accidentally printed Diclytra in the first instance, which by an erroneous conjecture was changed afterwards into Dielytra). Bikukulla Adans. Bicuculla Millsp.” (Fernald 1950).

Heterocentron,-i (s.n.II) Hook. & Arn. > Gk. heteros, unlike, + centron, spur, in reference to the 8 very unequal anthers;

Schizocentron,-ii (s.n.II) Meissn. > Gk. schizos, split + centron, spur, in reference to the anthers;

Tetracentron,-i (s.n.II), from Gk. tetra, four + centron, a spur, “The fruit is four-spurred” (Stearn 1996).
