A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
carph-, carpho-; -carpha,-ae (s.f.I); -carphus,-a,-um (adj.A): paleae; chaff; bracts [> Gk. carphos,-eos (s.n.III): “any dry particle, a dry stalk or chip, Lat. palea,-ae (s.f.I): dry twigs, straws, bits of wool such as birds make their nests of; in pl. husks, chaff, Lat. quisquiliae; the dry sticks of cinnamon were also called karphE” (Liddell & Scott).

- cyclocarphus, with rounded (circular) chaff (paleae), eury- or platycarphus, with broad husks or chaff (pappus), [glumes? receptacular bracts?]; heterocarphus, with variable chaff (e.g. bracts); leucocarphus, with white chaff; melanocarphus, with black chaff; polycarphus, with many or much chaff; pterocarphus, with winged chaff; stenocarphus, with narrow chaff; thysanocarphus, with fringed or tufted chaff (e.g. bracts); xanthocarphus, with yellow chaff.

NOTE: not to be confused with carp-, carpo-: in Gk. comp. relating to the fruit.

(Poaceae) Digitaria platycarpha; Snowdenia microcarpha; Panicum platycarphum; Syntherisma platycarphum.

(Asteraceae:) Carphobolus; Carphephorus,-i (s.m.II) > Gk. carphe, chaff + phoros, bearing; Carphochaete; Carpholoma; Carphopappus; Carphostephium.
