A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
carbonarius,-a,-um (adj.A): pertaining to charcoal; carbonized or charred, such as burnt ground; charcoal gray color.

Carbonaria,-ae (s.f.I), q.v. (sc. fornax,-acis (s.f.III): a furnace, oven or kiln for making charcoal; a fireplace;

Carbonarius,-ii (s.m.II), a charcoal-burner, collier, one who produces charcoal.

- [Peziza carbonaria; fungi] occupat satis frequens loca adusta sylvatica, carbonibus vetustioribus innata (S&A), quite frequent, it occupies burned over forested places, growing into the older charcoal [i.e. charred pieces].

- [fungi] greges hujus densos longe lateque effusos aliquoties legimus in carbonariis sylvaticis humidis vetustis, Pezizarum in universum ditissimis (S&A), we collected groups [i.e. colonies] of this several times spread out far and wide in old, moist wooded charred [sc. places], most rich in Pezizas as a whole.

- [fungi] frequent far and wide in charred, forested, old [sc. places].

- [fungi] situs rarius subsparsus: plerumque arcte congestus, caespitulis saepe longe lateque effusis, carbonaria paene tota obducentibus (S&A), the disposition [i.e. the manner of lying] more rarely somewhat scattered: usually tightly congested, with the little clumps often spread out far and wide, covering over nearly total charred [sc. places].

- [fungi] in arenosis (saepe nudis) apricis umbrosisque, carbonariis etc. passim frequens (S&A), in sandy (often bare) open and shady, carbonized [i.e. charred] places far and wide frequent.

- Titaicun, in carbonariis (11,000 ped.), Titaicun, in carbonized [i.e. charred] places.

- [Merulius carbonarius: fungus] passim obtegebat carbonaria (S&A), far and wide it covered charred [sc. places; loca carbonaria; fireplaces].

Astoma carbonarium; Geopyxis carbonaria; Thelephora carbonaria

Carbonarius,-ii (s.m.II), abl.sg. carbonario: a charcoal-burner, one who produces charcoal, charcoal-merchant.
