Cape Maria van Diemen, westernmost point of the North Island of New Zealand. The Cape was “originally an island composed mainly of basaltic-andesitic lave flows and dykes. Drifting sands joined It became joined to the rest of the North Island during the Pleistocene by drifting sands (Nicholson, K.N. (2006) “Unraveling the Complex Volcanic History of Northland New Zealand”]. The cape was named after the wife of Anthony van Diemen.
