A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
caninus,-a,-um (adj.A): of a dog, relating to dogs, canine; snarling, spiteful, mean; see cruel; see thorny.

Agrostis canina L., Dog's Grass; Rosa canina, Dog Rose (referring to the vicious prickles); Mutinus caninus,a mushroom with a disagreeable, fetid odor; Taraxacum caninum .

[Lichen] Peltigera canina: ad canis rabidi morsus symptomata præcavenda Dill., for preventing the symptoms of the bite of a rabid dog.

NOTE: under Medicinal Lichens: “Others [sc. lichens] again were believed to be endowed with specific virtues, e.g. Peltigera canina, which formed the basis of the celebrated “pulvis antilyssus” of Dr Mead, long regarded as a sovereign cure for hydrophobia” [1911 Encyclopædia Britannica/Lichens; May 2019 viewed]
