A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

c. (abbrev.) , also comm. (abbrev.): “common gender” (Lewis & Short) under “Other Abbreviations, Signs., etc.” p. xii); used after nouns e.g. agricola,-ae (s.c.I), that is, a farmer, rural dweller, the gender referring to a specific man (m.) or woman (f.). If used in a neuter sense, in a predicative sense of an object, it is neuter (n.), that is, neither male nor female.

- Matricida,-ae (s.comm.I), mater + caedo a mother’s murderer, a matricide.

- Parricida (paricida),-ae (s.comm.I), a parricide, a father-killer [ > L. pater,-tris (s.m.III) + caedo, the murderer of his or her father or parents, a parricide.

In botanical taxonomy, “c.” must include the neuter gender, as well as the masculine and feminine, as –cola,-ae (s.c.I) may refer to an attribute of a noun that is neuter:

Abulilon calcicola, the genus is neuter, hence the noun epithet is also neuter, it refers to neither a male or female: it is neuter, that is, “neither.

See discussion under -cola,-ae (s.c.I).

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
