A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Bee (insect): apis,-is (s.f.III), abl. sg. ape; also apes,-is (s.f.III), abl. sg. ape, gen. pl. apium; cf. apium,-ii (s.n.II), the parsley “especially liked by bees; an umbelliferous plant of several species” (Lewis & Short)

- grege apium, with a swarm of bees.

- congregatio apium, a swarm of bees.

- examen apium, a swarm of bees.
Bee-glue, the (reddish) juice with which bees stop up the entrances to their hive: fucus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. fuco, q.v.; see melligo,-inis (s.f.III);

Propolis,-is (s.f.III), abl. sg. propole: “the third foundation in making honey, a gummy substance with which the bees close the crevices of their hives, bee-glue, porpolis” (Lewis & Short) [ “> L., > Gk. > pro- + polis city: a brownish resinous material of waxy consistency collected by bees from the buds of trees and used as a cement - called also bee glue” (WIII)]; see melligo,-inis (s.f.III); bee-glue.
Bee-hive: alvearium,-ii (s.n.II), q.v., abl. sg. alveario; alveus,-i (s.m.II), abl. sg. alveo.
