Barbule, (as ‘barbula’) [note: not the genus] “the inner row of fringes or teeth in the peristome of such mosses as Tortula” (Lindley); “1. the inner row of teeth in the peristome of such Mosses as Tortula; 2. a small barb (Crozier)” (Jackson): barbula,-ae (s.f.I); see peristome. br />
Barbula,-ae (s.f.I), a genus of acrocarpous mosses; “The generic name, meaning little beard, refers to the tufted peristome of 32 hairlike divisions” (C&A).
