A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
badius,-a,-um (adj.A): bay, reddish-brown, dull brown, chocolate-brown; chestnut-brown (dull brown with a little red tinge); “chestnut-brown” (Lindley) [> L. badius,-a,-um (adj.A): “brown, chestnut-colored (rare; only of horses)” (Lewis & Short);

NOTE: ‘bay’ (Eng.adj.): a brown color with red, esp. used of horses “having a reddish brown body color with mane, tail, and points black” (WIII).

- badio (colore Coffeae fabarum ustarum) (S&A), badius (with the color of roasted Coffea beans).

- (fungus) Amanita spadicea. pileus margine sulcatus, fulvus sive e rufo badius (S&A), pileus sulcate on the margin, blackish-brown from reddish to reddish-brown.

- [fungi] infra annulum pilei margini concolor est, albescens nimirum, sed fibris rubicundis badiisve plus minus variegatus (S&A), below the annulus of the pileus, it is the same color on the margin, whitish, to be sure, but more or less variegated with ruddy or reddish-brown fibers.
