A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Auricle, an earlike appendage or lobe; (in mosses) a bulge or earlike lobe at the basal angles of the leaves: auricula,-ae (s.f.I), abl. sg. auricula, nom. pl. auriculae, acc. pl. auriculas, dat. & abl pl. auriculis [> dim. L. auris,-is, s.f.III, the ear]; see flap;

- auricula cauli adproximata parva explanata; the auricula near to the stem small flattened.

- cotyledones 2-3-plicatae, auriculis baseos involventibus (B&H), the cotyledones 2-3-plicate, with auricles enveloping the bases.

- vexillum basi auriculis inflexis appendiculatum (B&H), the banner petal appendiculate at the base with inflexed auricles.

- Vexillum amplum, patens v. reflexum, supra unguem brevem intus nudum, v. callosum, v. rarius auriculis inflexis appendiculatum (B&H), the vexillum large, spreading or reflexed, above the short [unguis, the claw-like base] inside naked, or callose, or more rarely appendiculate with inflexed auricles.

- foliis caulinis basi auriculis acutis hastato-amplexicaulibus (F. Mueller), with cauline leaves at the base with acute auricles hastate-stem-clasping.

- folia cordata aut reniformia, auriculis sursum non inflexis (DeCandolle), the leaves heart-shaped or kidney-shaped, with the auricles upwardly not inflexed.

Auricula,-ae (s.f.I), in pl. auriculae: “the so-called stipules of Scale-mosses.” (Lindley); the underleaves or amphigastria of Hepatics.
