A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
asceticus, ascetica, asceticum (adj.A): ascetical (= Eng.adj.) “ascetical of spiritual exercises to attain virtue/perfection” (WIII); extremely strict in religious exercises: religiously austere. Ascetic (Eng. noun) >“ Gk. askEtikos, lit. laborious, from askEtEs, one that exercises, hermit, from askein, to work, exercise” (WIII); “extremely strict in religious exercises: religiously austere; Ascetic (Eng.noun) “one who devotes himself to a life of self-discipline as celibacy, fasting, and self-mortification; one who is rigorously strict in religious exercises: asceta,-ae (s.m.II), q.v.; ascetria,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., nom.pl. ascetriae, gen.pl. ascetriarum: female ascetic, nun; see monk (Eng. noun); see nun (Eng. noun); see hermit (Eng. noun).
