A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

argillosus,-a,-um (adj.A): clayey, full of clay; “living in clayey places” (Lindley) [> argilla,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., ‘clay’];;

- in locis argillosis, in clayey places (often the word 'locis' is understood, hence, not written out).

- habitat in argillosis umbrosis Ohionis, it grows in clayey, shady (places) of Ohio.

- in planitiebus argilloso-arenosis paulo salinis deserti juxta flumen Murray (F. Mueller), in the clayey-sandy plains, somewhat saline, of the desert beside the Murray River.

- in solo argilloso in nemorosis graminosis humidiusculis per totam Europam (C. Mueller), on clay soil in woodland, grassy, somewhat humid [places] throughout all Europe.

- In terra argillosa praeprimis novalium Sardiniae, Siciliae, agri Neapolitani et Romani (C. Mueller), in clayey soil primarily of the fallow fields of Sandinia, Sicily, of the Naples region and Rome.

- supra terram nudam sterilem, potissime argillaceam, in Europa tota passim, locis quibiusdam sat frequens (Nyl.), over bare sterile earth, most preferrably clayey, here and there in the whole of Europe, quite frequent in certain places.

- [Jacea major] nascitur inter fruges & in campis non cultis, argilloso praesertim solo: estque (ut recte Lobelius) segetum potius quam pratorum (Ray), it originates among the field-crops and in uncultivated fields, above all in clayey soil: and is (as Lobelius correctly says) [a plant] of the grain-fields rather than the meadows.

- habitat prope Cafsam et Mascar in arvis argillosis et arenosis (Desf.), it grows near Cafsam and Mascar in clayey and sandy (ploughed) fields.

- [Calicium trichale var. physarellum] C. Prevostii Dub. respicit formam ad muros argillaceos Bernaici in Gallia vigentem (Nyl.), Calicium Prevostii Dub. [recalls] the form flourishing in France on the clay walls of Bernaicum.

A work in progress, presently with preliminary A through R, and S, and with S (in part) through Z essentially completed.
