Arena,-ae (s.f.I): sand(s); sandy place, sandy desert; sandbar; beach, coast, shore; (classically harena,-ae(s.f.I); syn. sabulum,-i (s.n.II), q.v., glarea,-ae (s.f.I), q.v., saburra,-ae (s.f.I), q.v. [> L. harena,-ae (s.f.I) ([classically] ‘better than arena,-ae (s.f.I)” (Lewis & Short), sand; sands, a sandy place; a sandy desert waste; the shore of the sea, the beach, coast, strand; the place of combat, scene or theater of any contest (as of war, a single battle, a dispute, etc.)” (Lewis & Short)]; see shore; see grave;

- [Saccharum cylindricum] arenas mobiles coercet (Desf.), it holds together shifting sands.

- in desertis salsis Sibiriae, in arena mobili Tauriae (DeCandolle), in the salt deserts of Sibiria, in the shifting sand [desert] of Tauria [Taurasia].

Arenula,-ae (s.f.I): fine sand, a grain of sand (Lewis & Short) [> L. dim. of arena,-ae (s.f.I), sand].

Sabulo,-onis (s.f.III), q.v., abl. sg. sabulone; also sabulum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. sabulo, coarse sand; syn. arena,-ae (s.f.I).
