A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
apterus,-a,-um (adj.A): apterous, without wings; = exalatus,-a,-um (adj.A); opp. alatus,-a,-um (adj.A), ‘winged;’

- semina majuscula, 3-alata v. aptera, chalaza alisque suberosis v. membranaceis (B&H), seeds rather big, 3-alate or without wings.

- siliqua elongata, stylo brevi v. elongato, seminibus 1-seriatis, apteris (B&H), siliqua elongate, with the style short or elongate, with the seeds in one row, wingless.

- valvae apterae (alatae in quibusdam Lepidiis (B&H), the valves wingless (winged in certain Lepidia.

- siliqua brevis, indehiscens, inarticulata, saepe crustacea v. ossea, alata v. aptera (B&H), silique short, indehiscent, without a joint, crustaceous or bony, winged or wingless.

- valvis navìcularibus, dorso obtusis, apteris (B&H), with the valves boat-shaped (i.e. at the tip), obtuse on the base, wingless.
