A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
apodus,-a,-um (adj.A): sessile, without a stipe; lacking a foot; without a stipe or stalk; “footless, sessile, without a stalk” (Stearn 1996), as at the base of the column in some Orchidaceae = apus, gen.sg. apodis, q.v., abl.sg. apode [> Gk. a, ‘without’ + -podus,-a,-um (adj.A) > pous, gen sg. podis (s.m.III), foot]; see sessile;

- [Orchideae] Columna in pedem producta v. apoda (B&H), the column prolonged into a foot or lacking a foot.

- [Orchideae] labelli unguis plus minus cum columna apoda connatus (B&H), the spur of the labellum more or less connate with the footless column.

- [Orchideae] Labellum basi columnam apodam amplectens nec adnatum (B&H), the labellum at the base embracing [i.e. surrounding] a footless column, not adnate.

- [Orchideae] columna apoda, v. rarius brevissime lateque producta (B&H), (B&H), the column lacking a foot or more rarely very shortly and broadly prolonged.

- [Orchideae] columna subteres, exalata, apoda v. in pedem brevem producta (B&H), the column almost cylindric, lacking wings, footless or prolonged into a short foot.

Selaginella apoda, ‘footless; from the sessile spikes’ (Fernald 1950).
