A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
apical (Eng.adj.), relating to the apex or tip; “at the point of anything” (Lindley); (fungi) “(of the stipe) pertaining to the portion near the pileus; referring to the apex” (S&D): apicalis,-e (adj.B); cf. terminal;

NOTE: in Gk. comp acr-, acro-, q.v.

- loculis rima longitudiuali v. rarissime poro apicali dehiscentibus (B&H), with the locules dehiscing.

- capsula membranacea v. crustácea, rarissime subbaccata, in valvas v. in dentes apicales tot quot styli v. numero duplo dehiscens (B&H), capsule membranaceous or crustaceous, very rarely somewhat pulpy [i.e. berry-like], dehiscing into valves or into apical teeth as many as the styles or double the number.

- antherae parvae, saepe glandula dorsali v. apicali instructae (B&H), anthers small, often provided with a dorsal or apical glandule.

- semina deorsum imbricata, compressa, nucleo parvo apicali (B&H), seeds downwardly imbricate, compressed, with a small apical nuclet.

- styli rami quasi truncati, dentibus apicalibus 2 brevissimis obtusis (B&H), branches of the style as if ? truncate, with apical teeth 2, very short, obtuse.

- cellula (-ae s.f.I) apicalis, apical cell.

- crescentia,-ae (s.f.I) apicalis, growth apical.

Apical axis: (diatoms) axis,-is (s.m.III) apicalis (adj.B.), abl.sg. axe apicali: “the apical axis is that line which passes through the center of the pervalvar axis in the direction of the raphe and at equal distances from homologous points of the girdle-band surfaces” (Jackson).

subapicalis,-e (adj.B), subterminalis,-e (adj.B): ending just before the apex.
