A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
antiquus,-a,-um (adj.A), compar. antiquior,-ius (adj.B), superl. antiquissimus,-a,-um (adj.A): “ancient, antique” (Stearn 1996); “ancient, old, former; the past, gone by, former; of the old fashion, good, simple, honest; old, venerable, illustrious; that has been in existence a long time, old” (Lewis & Short); cf. primigenius,-a,-um (adj.A); cf. primigenus,-a,-um (adj.A); primitivus,-a,-um (adj.A);

antiquorum (gen.pl.): of the ancients (Stearn 1996).

Antiqui,-orum (pl.m.II), abl.pl. antiquis: “the ancients, esp. the ancient writers (i.e. those whose age has been long past; while ‘veteres’ denotes those who have lived and acted for a long time)” (Lewis & Short).

Bonaga antiquorum (Fabaceae); Brassica antiquorum; Caladium antiquorum; Colocasia antiquorum; Cyperus antiquorum; Euphorbia antiquorum; Mnium antiquorum.

Antiquum,-i (s.n.II), abl.sg. antiquo: “antiquity, the things of olden times.” Also “an old custom or habit.” (Lewis & Short).

- Rhabarbarum forte Dioscoridis & antiquorum. (Tourn.), perhaps the Rhabarbarum of Dioscorides and of the ancients.

- radice cylindrico - fasciculata, foliis radicalibus basi fibrillis foliorum antiquorum vestitis (Boissier), with the root cylindric-fasciculate, with the basal leaves clothed in the fibrils of the old leaves.

- nomen antiquum, a Plinio lichenibus muscisque nonnullis arboreis datum, a Dillenio huicce generi impositum, a Linnaeo et Hedwigio sancitum. Cf. Dill. Musc. p. 240. (C. Mueller), an ancient name, given by Pliny for some arboreal mosses and lichens, imposed by Dillenius on this genus, had been sanctified by Linnaeus and Hedwig. Compare Dillenius, Musci page 240.

- [Citrus medica] culta speciatim in Media et in Europa austr. jam a temporibus antiquissimis (DeCandolle), cultivated in Middle and southern Europe until now from most ancient times.

- terrae motus non infrequentes in regno Algeriensi, et prope Oran saxa porosa innumera antiquis volcanibus [sic] eructata observantur (Desf.), movements of the ground not infrequent in the Kingdom of Algeria, and near Oran countless porous stones [i.e. pumice] are observed erupted from ancient volcanoes.

- Aquaeductus Carthaginis antiquae qui aquas a monte Zowan adducebat, hinc et inde adhuc stat (Desfont.), the ancient aqueduct of Carthage which used to convey the waters from mount Zowan, here and there as yet stand.

- planta ab antiquissimis temporibus cognita sed ultimis temporibus neglecta, plant known from most ancient times but in the latest times neglected (Stearn 1983).

- [moss] In terra lapidosa, ad muros antiquos muscosos, ad arborum radices (C. Muell.), on stony soil, on ancient mossy [city] walls, on the roots of trees.

Tariotarum antiqua regio, the ancient region of the Tariotae.
