A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
annual, lasting a year, recurring yearly; “flowering and fruiting in the same year in which it is raised from seed” (Lindley); “of only one year’s duration. Winter-annual, a plant from autumn-sown seed which glooms and fruits in the following spring” (Fernald 1950); (in bryology) “of one year’s duration; completing life cycle in one year” (Magill (1990); (in fungi) “completing growth in one season” (S&D): annuus,-a,-um (adj. A); see yearly; see summer annual, winter annual; cf. perennis,-e (adj.B), lasting throughout the year and from year to year; see perennial; cf. biennis,-e (adj.B), biennial, q.v., continuing two years; cf. ephemeral, ephemerous, fleeting, transitory, short-lived, with a short life cycle; “enduring but a day” (Lindley), lasting for a day or less;

- radices perennes lignosae seu herbaceae annuae (DeCandolle), the roots perennial, woody or herbaceous, annual.

- herba annua, annual herb.

- herbae saepe perperam annuae dictae (B&H), herbs often incorrectly called annuals.

summer annual (plant), q.v., spring-germinating, dying by autumn; planta,-ae (s.f.I) annua (adj.A), planta aestivalis (adj.B) or aestiva (adj.A).

winter annual (plant), q.v., autumn germinating, overwintering and dying the following autumn; planta,-ae (s.f.I) annua (adj.A) hiemalis (adj.B).

NOTE: herbaceus,-a,-um (adj.A), q.v., “producing an annual stem from a perennial root” (Lindley).

“Duration and Fall of the Leaf.-The leaf varies as regards its duration, and receives different names accordingly. Thus when it falls off soon after its appearance, it is said to be fugacious or caducous; if it lasts throughout the season in which it is developed, it is deciduous or annual” (Bentley).
