A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Anisum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. aniso, = Gk. anison: Anise: Pimpinella anisum L. [Apiaceae] (Lewis & Short); the old Arabic name of a plant native from Greece to Egypt; “the old name as well as the specific epithet for anise (Pimpinella anisum), much used for flavoring in various condiments, sweets, medicines, and liqueurs” (Stearn 1996); a flavor and fragrance associated also with Illicum verum (star anise), Illicum anisatum (Japanese star anise), fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) and licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra);

- [Illicium] Capsulae e China sub nomine Anisum Chinensis adportatae (DeCandolle), the capsules imported from China under the name Anisum Chinensis.

- folia trita anisum redolentia (DeCandolle), the bruised leaves smelling of Anise.

- [Nelumbium] flores pulcherrimi, anisum spirantes (DeCandolle), flowers most beautiful, aromatic of Anise.

adjj.: anisatus,-a,-um (adj.A): flavored or smelling of anise-seed; “partaking of the scent of Anise, Pimpinella Anisum L.” (Jackson); aniseus,-a,-um (adj.A); anisodorus,-a,-um (adj.A).

NOTE: Anise, Star-: Illicium verum Hook. f., of China.
