A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
amphoriformis,-e (adj.B): in the shape of an amphora, an ancient Greek jar with a large oval body, abruptly narrowed above to a narrow cylindrical neck and two handles that rise almost to the level of the mouth, pointed or disk-shaped at the bottom (WIII) [> L. amphora,-ae (s.f.I), q.v. = Gk. amphoreus, “a vessel, usually made of clay, with two handles or ears; for liquids, esp. wine, a flagon, pitcher, flask; bottle, jar” (Lewis & Short)];

- folia radicalia tubarformia seu amphoraeformia, lamina parva (B&H), radical leaves tube- or amphora-shaped, with a small blade.

Amphidium Schimper (Orthotrichaceae): variant of Amphoridium "like an [little] urn,” or amphora, referring to the capsule shape of this acrocarpous moss.
