Amphithecium; in mycology: the thalline margine of a lichen apothecium” (Ainsworth & Bisby); in mosses, the outer embryonic tissue of a developing capsule (surrounding the endothecium); “in bryophytes the outer part of the embryonic capsule that gives rise to all tissues from the epidermis to the outer spore sac; also producing the spore sac in Sphagnum and hornworts” (Magill 1990): amphithecium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. amphithecio, nom. pl. amphithecia, dat. & abl. pl. amphitheciis; see endothecium.
