A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Amphitheater, “a circular or oval building in which each successive seat, raised above the last, furnished an unobstructed view. From its shape it was sometimes called circus” (Lewis & Short): amphitheatrum,-i (s.n.II), abl. sg. amphitheatro [> Gk. amphi-, ‘on both sides,’ + theatron, a theater];

- [moss] in muris amphitheatri Veronensis, on the walls of the [Roman, Ist century AD] amphitheater of Verona {Verona, Italy; in which operatic and other performances were held from around the Rennaisance due to its outstanding acoustics).

- ruinae antiquae benemultae occurunt in regno Algeriensi prope Constantine ...; in Tunetano circa Zowan ... ubi amplissimum et miratu dignissimum superest Amphitheatrum (Desfont.), [[very many ancient ruins occur in Algeria [in the Algerian kingdom near Constantine ... [etc.]; in the Tunesian [sc. kindgom] around Zowan ... [etc.] where the extremely large amphitheater still exists and is most worthy of marvel.
