Amphigastrium, underleaf, q.v. (in hepatics): amphigastrium,-ii (s.n.II), abl. sg. amphigastrio, nom. & acc. pl. amphigastria, abl. pl. amphigastriis; “the so-called stipules of Scale-mosses” [i.e. plants) any of various leafy liverworts of the order Jungermanniales, which resemble mosses] (Lindley); (in liverworts) the under-leaves, often reduced or vestigial, especially in Jungermanniales, in some mosses, stipulelike leaves on the underside of the stem and branches contrasted with lateral leaves; “one of the small appressed stipulelike leaves on the ventral [i.e. under] side of the stem in certain liverworts” (WIII); “in a few mosses, smaller leaves on the upper (Racopilum) or lower (Helicophyllum) stem surface, variously differentiated from the lateral leaves” (Magill 1990) {> Gk. amphi-, ‘around’ + gaster, belly];

- amphigastria foliis aequilonga, ex angusta basi ovata, ad 1/3 profunde lunatim excisa, laciniis lanceolatis porrectis, amphigastria as long as the leaves, from a narrow base ovate, to 1/3 deeply lunately cut, with segments lanceolate directed outwards and forwards (Stearn).

- amphigastriis usque ca. 0.1--0.25 longitudinis bifidis, with underleaves bifid to about 0.1 -- 0.25 of the length.

- amphig. magna, anguste oblonga, ad medium fere emarginata, utroque latere parvo dente armata, laciniis apicalibus lanceolatis, setaceis (Steph.), amphigastria large, narrowly oblong, at the middle almost emarginate, on each side armed with a small tooth, with setaceous, lanceolate apical laciniae.

- amphigastria caulina semper praesentia, interdum magna, pro more parva et facile destructa, (Steph), stem amphigastria always present, sometimes large, customarily small and easily destroyed.

- amphigastria bene evoluta, ad folia contigua per latus alterum vel ambo connata, underleaves well-developed, connate on one or both sides to adjacent leaves.
