A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Ampelos,-i (s.f.II), abl. sg. ampelo: a vine, a grape-vine; syn. vitis [> Gk. ampelos]; ampelos agria, wild vine, vine of the fields; syn. labrusca, vitis, q.v.; ampelos,-i has not been used as a generic name in Linnean nomenclature, although vitis has (Vitis,-is L. (s.f.III), Vitaceae).

Ampelopsis Michx. (Vitaceae), Pepper vine.from Gk. ampelos, the vine, and opsis, appearance, “It looks like and is closely related to the grape vine” (Stearn 1996); Ampelamus Raf., Sandvine (Asclepiadaceae), from Gk. ampelos, a vine, the ending is Rafinesquean (Fernald 1950); Ampelozizyphus Ducke (Rhamnaceae): Ampelozizyphus amazonicus, a climbing vine. Ampelomyces,-etis (s.m.III), a fungus.
