amm-, ammo-: in Gk. comp., sand- [> Gk. ammos (s.f.II; note gender): sand; sandy ground, racecourse (Liddell & Scott); see ammi (s.n.); see sand;

- ammobius, living or dwelling in or on sand; ammophilus, sand-loving.

- ammogenus,-a,-um (adj.A), born of the sands, dweller in sandy regions.

- ammophilus, sand-loving, “as the vegetation of [sand] dunes” (Jackson); (fungi) sand-loving; living on sand; ammophilous, “living or growing in the sand or in dry sandy places (ammophilous grasses)” (WIII).

- Ammodytes, q.v.: “living in sandy places” (Lindley).

Ammobium,-ii (s.n.II): > Gk. ammos, sand + Gk. bios, life: “a small genus of Australian herbs” (WIII); Ammobium,-ii (s.n.II). Derived from ammos, sand, and bio, to live; in reference to the situation where the plants grow (Paxton); Winged Everlasting > Gk. ammos, sand + bio, to live; in reference to the native habitat. Compositae (Stearn 1996).

Ammocharis,-itis (s.f.III): > Ammos, sand, and chairo, to delight. Amaryllidaceae (Paxton); > Gk. ammos, sand + charis, grace, beauty; an allusion both to the habitat and to the quality of these bulbous plants. Amaryllidaceae (Stearn 19960.

Ammodenia,-ae (s.f.I), Seabeach Sandwort (Caryophyllaceae); a plant ecologically associated with Ammophila arenaria; “From all the segregate-genera Ammodenia is supposed to be separated by the highly developed glandular-lobed disk, by its bladdery capsule ...”. (Fernald; the Unity of the Genus Arenaria; Rhodora 1919).

Ammodendron,-i (s.n.II) > Gk. ammos, sand, and dendron, a tree; situation. Fabaceae (Paxton).

Ammogeton,-onis (s.m.III)> Gk. ammos, sand, and geiton, near; situation. Asteraceae (Paxton) (i.e. near or bordering on the sands).

Ammophila,-ae (s.f.I), Sand-reed [> Gk. ammos, sand, and philein, to love]; Marram or beach grass> Gk. ammos, sand; philos, loving. Gramineae (Stearn 1996).

also Ammophila,-ae (s.f.I): a sand wasp of the genus Sphex (WIII).

Ammyrsine. Derived from Gk. ammos, sand, and myrsine, a myrtle. Ericaceae (Paxton).
