A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
ambly-: in Gk. comp., blunt, faint, obtuse, dulled [> Gk. adj. amblus,-eia,-u (amblys,-eia,-y), “blunt, dulled, with edge or point taken off; (of sight, hearing, of the feelings or mind) dimmed, dull, monotonous; making dull, darkening (of a cloud) (after Liddell & Scott)]; = in L. comp. obtus-, q.v.; opp. oxy-, q.v., in Gk. comp., ‘sharp;’

- amblyantherus, blunt-anthered; amblyanthus, blunt-flowered; amblycarpus, with obtus fruits; amblycephalus, blunt-headed; amblygonus (-os), with blunt angles; amblyodon, blunt-toothed; amblylepideus, with blunt scales; amblyphyllus, blunt-leaved; amblypterus, with blunt wings; amblyspermus, with obtuse seeds; amblytropis, with a blunt keel.

Amblyodon B.S.G.,> Gk. ambly, blunt + odon, tooth, referring to the blunt peristome teeth.

Amblystegium B.S.G., > Gk. ambly-, blunt + stegE, roof, covering: in allusion to the blunt (not long-rostrate) operculum.

amblyoscopia,-ae (s.f.I): the condition of dimness of sight.

Amblyopsis, a genus of sightless fishes.
