A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Alveolus,-i (s.m.II): a small cavity, hollow or pit; “a cell or compartment of a honeycomb” (WIII); (fungi) “a small cavity” (S&D); (algae) “the pit-like markings on the valves of many Diatomaceae” (Jackson) [> L. alveolus,-i (s.m.II), “a small hollow or cavity; a tray, trough, basin; the small channel of a river” (Lewis & Short), dim. of alveus,-i (s.m.II), q.v.]; cf. fovea,-ae (s.f.I), q.v. a small pit or depression; see foleola,-ae (s.f.I);

- receptaculi fimbrillae valde auctae et in massam concretae achaenia in alveolis omnino includunt (B&H), minute fringes of the receptacle strongly enlarged and grown together into a mass, they everywhere include the achenes in small cavities.

- carpella oo [=infinite], intra alveolos tori carnosi obconici vertice plani singillatim et inordinate fere ad apicem inclusa (B&H), carpella indeterminate, included at the flat summit one by one and irregularly almost to the tip within the alveoli of the fleshy, obconic torus.

- flores in alveolis spadicis numerosi (B&H), flowers numerous in the alveoli of the spadix.

- flores foeminei minores, alveolis spadicis immersi (B&H), female flowers smaller, immersed in the alveoli of the spadix.

NOTE: alveoli may also be contrasted with urn-shaped pits, urceoli; see urceolus,-i (s.m.II);

- flores in alveolis v. urceolis spiraliter dispositi (B&H), flowers spirally arranged in in alveoli or urceoli [i.e. urn-shaped pits].
