A Grammatical Dictionary of Botanical Latin

 
Alveola,-ae (s.f.I): an alveole; (obsol.) “a socket” (Lindley), i.e. an opening, hollow, hole or cavity that serves as a support for some other part; alveole, a small surface depression or pit; pore, cavity, as the pits on the naked receptacle of Compositae; the pores of certain fungi, such as Polyporus, “the pitted perithecium in certain fungi” (WIII); (fungi) “a cavity or pit on the surface” (S&D); also used in diatoms; also synonymous with alveolus (WIII), q.v.; see cavity; cf. fovea,-ae (s.f.I), q.v. a small pit or depression; see foleola,-ae (s.f.I);

- alveolae magnae (10 in faciei diametro) (Steph.), alveolae (pits) large, 10 on the diameter of the surface.

- receptaculi alveolae achaenia aequantia v. superantia (B&H), the achenes equalling or overtopping the alveolae of the receptacle.
